Developing leaders for a complex

Fortius Consulting partners with organisations to strengthen leadership, team performance and decision-making in complex environments.

Led by Marieke D’Cruz, an Olympian and former McKinsey & Company consultant, Fortius brings together experience from elite sport and top-tier consulting.

Marieke has spent her career working with organisations to navigate complexity — supporting leaders and teams to align around strategy, strengthen how they work together, and perform under pressure.

Her work today focuses on developing leadership capability and team effectiveness — helping organisations not just define direction, but create the conditions required to execute it.

She partners closely with clients to design practical, tailored approaches that reflect the realities of their environment and the challenges they are facing.

Our approach

We focus on the conditions that enable leaders and teams to perform — especially in complexity, pressure and change.

See the system clearly

Performance challenges are rarely about capability alone. They emerge from the interaction between people, context and system - shaped by priorities, incentives, culture and ways of working. We help leaders step back to see these dynamics clearly, so they can focus effort where it will have the greatest impact.

Develop adaptive leaders

In complex environments, leadership is not a set of skills — it is a practice. Leaders are required to make progress on complex challenges where there are no clear answers and multiple stakeholders hold competing priorities. Our work builds this adaptive capacity — strengthening the maturity, judgement and presence required to lead in real conditions, not ideal ones.

Build the capacity to lead under pressure

Sustainable performance in complex environments requires leaders who can regulate themselves, stay present, and make sound decisions under pressure. In high-demand, uncertain environments, a leader’s internal state shapes how they think, respond and lead others.

We integrate insights from leadership development, psychology and physiology to help leaders recognise these patterns and work with them — so they can remain clear, grounded and effective when it matters most.

The result is work that is grounded, practical and tailored — designed to build leaders and teams who can sustain performance and drive change as conditions evolve.

Our services

  • Supporting leaders to grow the capacity required to perform in complexity.

Our work focuses on developing the awareness, judgement and adaptability leaders need to navigate ambiguity, make sound decisions under pressure, and inspire and mobilise others.

    This includes:

    • 1:1 and small group coaching

    • Leadership program and development journey design

    • Workshop facilitation

  • Turning groups of capable individuals into aligned, high-performing teams.

We work with teams to strengthen how they operate — improving clarity, trust and accountability, while enabling productive challenge and better decision-making.

  • Ensuring strategy translates into aligned, effective execution.

Many organisations don’t struggle to define strategy — they struggle to embed it. We help leadership teams align around priorities, navigate trade-offs, and create the conditions required for strategy to come to life through people, behaviours and ways of working.

About Marieke

Marieke D’Cruz is a leadership development practitioner, coach and researcher focused on how leaders build the capacity to perform in complex, high-pressure environments.

Her work is shaped by experience across three distinct but connected domains.

As an Olympian and world champion swimmer, Marieke developed a deep understanding of what sustained high performance requires — particularly under pressure, scrutiny and expectation.

She then spent time at McKinsey & Company, working with organisations on strategy, transformation and performance — supporting senior leaders to navigate complexity and drive results at scale.

Today, her work brings these worlds together. She partners with organisations to develop leaders and teams who can operate effectively in uncertainty — strengthening decision-making, team dynamics and the conditions required for performance.

Alongside her client work, Marieke is undertaking a PhD at the University of Queensland, exploring the intersection of leadership development, adult development and nervous system regulation — with a focus on how leaders grow the capacity to navigate complexity and make better decisions.

Marieke lives in Brisbane with her young family, and every now and then still enjoys a few laps at her local swimming pool.
